Most GP surgeries no longer remove ear wax
Ear syringing has largely been withdrawn from NHS general practice, and hospital ENT waits for wax removal can run to months. That leaves most people choosing between waiting, buying home kits, or a private clinic. Microsuction: the pros and the cons
Wax is removed under direct vision, so the pharmacist can see exactly what’s happening. Nothing wet goes into the ear, so it’s safe for people with a history of perforation, grommets or infection. Both ears in one visit. Immediate result — most people hear the difference before they leave the chair.
The suction is noisy — some people find it startling. Very hard or deep wax may need olive oil for a few days and a second visit. A brief cough reflex or moment of dizziness can occur and passes quickly. As with any ear procedure there is a small risk of grazing the canal; this is why we examine first and stop if it isn’t safe to continue.

Before you come
Use olive oil drops 2–3 times a day for 3–5 days. It makes the wax easier to remove and the appointment more comfortable. Skip this if you’ve been told you have a perforation.

Examination
Your pharmacist checks both ears with an otoscope, confirms wax is the cause, and talks you through what they can see. The £15 check-up fee is deductible from your treatment cost.

Removal & aftercare
Wax is lifted out with a fine suction probe under magnification. You’ll get written aftercare advice and, if you’re prone to build-up, a plan to keep it away.
